“So much of what students struggle with—stress, self-doubt, sudden challenges—goes unaddressed. Emotional intelligence isn’t just a concept; it’s the difference between a student staying in college or dropping out.”
These words from Krystal’s master’s thesis reflect her passion and dedication to supporting young people through their college journeys. Starting as a CARA Bridge Coach in 2017, then working as an intern for the Right to College (RtC) program, and now a Senior Associate for RtC, Krystal’s story is one of resilience, ambition, and paying it forward. Today, we’re so proud to celebrate her latest milestone: earning her master’s degree in Youth Studies from the CUNY School of Professional Studies!
Her thesis, “How Emotional Intelligence Competencies Incorporated into College and Career Readiness Curriculum Support Student Success in the First Year of College,” highlights her commitment to addressing the mental and emotional barriers first-generation students often face. As Krystal explains, “Students aren’t just navigating academics; they’re juggling stress and anxiety.”
A focus on emotional intelligence drives Krystal’s work at CARA, where she integrates social-emotional learning into Right to College programming to prepare students not just academically, but emotionally, for the realities of college life— from learning how to manage stress around finances, to overcoming the overwhelm that comes from things you cannot control.
Krystal’s lived experiences shape her passion for youth development, as she has faced many of the same challenges as the students she supports—balancing academic pressure, managing mental health struggles, and navigating through moments of self-doubt. “If it wasn’t for CARA, I probably would have dropped out of undergrad,” she says, “but my role gave me a sense of purpose and accountability”.
Krystal’s journey is a testament to what’s possible when first-generation students are given the tools, encouragement, and support they need to succeed. At CARA, we couldn’t be prouder of her achievements and the impact she continues to make in the lives of young people.
Congratulations, Krystal, on earning your master’s degree, and thank you for being a constant source of inspiration for all of us at CARA!
