Article: Credible Messengers and Cultural Guides: How Near-Peers Expand Access to College Advising in Urban High Schools
Published: Urban Education (2025)
In this research study, we document the skills and experiences near-peers leverage when advising students through postsecondary decisions. With co-authors, Dr. Leigh McCallen of NYU’s Metro Center and Dr. Becca Bassett of the University of Arkansas, we find that near-peers not only provide expert guidance through the process but – drawing on their own experiences and shared identities with students – also bring the credibility and empathy needed to be trusted messengers of this information. This research affirms that peer-to-peer models are powerful, effective strategies for expanding the reach and cultural responsiveness of postsecondary advising.
