9:00 – 11:30AM

Sponsored by Graduate NYC! and LISC

The Graduate Center, CUNY
365 5th Ave (between 34th and 35th Street)

College readiness and success programs are most effective when viewed as a continuum of information, services, programs and related experiences – and youth leadership is an important component of any strong program. The Youth Leadership in College Access and Success Forum will focus on community-based approaches that involve youth as leaders, advocates, and peer-to-peer mentors who provide critical college guidance and retention support to fellow students. The Forum will present relevant research, as well as best practices from local organizations who will share models of success. Students will share their experiences as youth leaders who catalyze change and bring a depth of understanding to student barriers in college access and success.  Speakers will include representatives from:Asian Americans for Equality (AAFE), College Access: Research and Action(CARA), Make the Road-NY, Urban Youth Collaborative, as well as current and former youth leaders.

“Living Undocumented”

Living Undocumented explores the lives of diverse undocumented immigrant youth to illustrate the realities, challenges and opportunities they face through high school, college, and beyond.

Admissions is a character driven, feature-length creative nonfiction film exploring the highly personal stories of four undocumented college students:  Blanca, Charlie, Viridiana and Jong Min. Trapped at the intersection of education policy and broken immigration systems, the obstacles these students face—financial, legal and psychological—are presented, demonstrating the dehumanizing effects of marginalization and unequal educational access.
